Interview with Akaa

1. How did your background in Economics influence your transition into video production, and do you find any parallels between the two fields?

Akaa: My background in Economics didn’t quite influence my transition into video production directly, as I began learning the craft while still a student. However, the principles of Economics, such as resource management and business acumen, have been invaluable. Video production is a business, and my economics background helps me manage clients and finances effectively. I didn’t choose video production; it chose me. A senior friend, Engr. Andrew Wuese, introduced me to it, and I quickly developed a passion for creating beautiful scenes and effects.

2. What sparked your passion for video production, and what drives your creativity in storytelling through visuals?

Akaa: My passion for video production was ignited when I saw the opportunity it presented to create visually captivating stories. The ability to replicate and improve upon scenes I admired in movies motivated me. My desire to continually improve and learn new techniques keeps my creativity alive.

3. How do you balance your artistic vision with the technical aspects of video production, and what’s your favorite part of the production process?

Akaa: Balancing artistic vision with technical execution can be challenging, especially when budget constraints come into play. Consistency, continuous learning, and creativity help me navigate these challenges. My favorite part of the production process is editing. It brings immense joy when I achieve or enhance an idea through editing, often spending entire days immersed in it without tiring.

4. How do you think video production can be used as a tool for social change or economic development, particularly in the context of Benue State and Nigeria?

Akaa: Video production has immense potential as a tool for social change and economic development. It shapes perceptions and narratives, as seen with Hollywood’s portrayal of American soldiers. In Nigeria, if we tell better stories and highlight our culture and opportunities, we can drive societal change and attract investments. Video production itself is a lucrative skill, capable of providing employment and economic growth.

5. What advice would you give to young creatives looking to break into the video production industry, and what skills or knowledge do you think are essential for success in this field?

Akaa: Breaking into the video production industry requires patience, consistency, and a continuous learning mindset. Find a mentor and be open to guidance. Stay updated with advancements, especially with AI technology, to remain relevant. Never stop learning, as the industry is rapidly evolving.
