Scholes Slams Manchester United’s Worst Signing Ever, Citing ‘Unbelievable’ Incompetence

Paul Scholes has named Manchester United’s worst-ever signing, following the team’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Scholes, a Manchester United legend with a career that spanned two decades, won numerous trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, including 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two Champions Leagues. During a fan-led debate with former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher and journalist David Ornstein, Scholes reflected on the best and worst signings in United’s history.

While discussing the impact of players like Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney, Scholes was prompted to address the worst signings after United’s latest setback, which has been a recent blemish in the club’s history since Scholes’ retirement in 2013.

One fan suggested Antony as the worst signing, citing the Brazilian’s minimal impact since his £85 million transfer from Ajax in 2022. Antony was an unused substitute during Sunday’s loss and has contributed only 11 goals and five assists so far.

Scholes, however, took a different view. Speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, he recalled some of the club’s past missteps: “You know what, I was going to go a bit further back than that. Juan Sebastian Veron was a good player in Europe, but it didn’t work out for him at United.

“I’d also think about the goalkeepers we had to replace Peter Schmeichel. Fabian Barthez was decent, but I’m thinking more along the lines of Massimo Taibi and Mark Bosnich. Bosnich, for instance, was good at Villa, but his professionalism at United was lacking.

“In shooting practice, he’d be exhausted after just a few shots. I noticed he couldn’t even kick a football properly—he’d miss the ball and just kick the floor. In our first game of the season against Everton, he couldn’t even reach the halfway line with his kicks. It was a major disappointment.”

Scholes added that, when considering value for money, Antony’s transfer has not been successful. He also mentioned Alexis Sanchez as another major disappointment from Arsenal.

In conclusion, Scholes identified Mark Bosnich as his pick for the worst signing. Carragher humorously noted that Bosnich might have something to say in response, to which Scholes agreed.
